Penlight
Hair ties and clips
Compression socks
Lip balm

  1. Stethoscope. Maternal assessments, and sometimes a newborn's first listen.
  2. Watch with a second hand. Timing contractions and newborn heart rates.
  3. Pocket reference for fetal heart rate tracing categories (if your unit uses one). Quick check during long labors.
  4. Penlight. Assessments and late-night checks in dim rooms.
  5. Hair ties and clips. For you, and sometimes a laboring patient who asks.
  6. Compression socks. Long labors mean long hours standing.
  7. Lip balm. For you. (And yes, patients ask.)
  8. Snacks. Deliveries don't wait for your break.
  9. Spare scrubs and socks. Births are messy, beautifully.
  10. Water bottle. Coaching pushing is a workout.
