The flat-lay

Stethoscope
Penlight
Trauma shears
Small notebook or brain sheets
Multicolor pen (and a backup)
Compression socks
Insulated water bottle
High-protein snacks
Phone charger with a long cable
Lip balm and hand cream
Sleep mask and earplugs
A warm layer
  1. Stethoscope. Heart, lungs and bowel sounds on every assessment, every patient.
  2. Penlight. Pupil checks are routine on a neuro or sedated patient.
  3. Trauma shears. For dressings, tape and the occasional emergency.
  4. Small notebook or brain sheets. Drips, titrations and timelines on one page.
  5. Multicolor pen (and a backup). Pens disappear at 0300. Always carry a spare.
  6. Compression socks. Twelve hours on your feet. Your legs will thank you.
  7. Insulated water bottle. Night shift dehydration sneaks up on you.
  8. High-protein snacks. For the 0400 slump when the cafeteria is closed.
  9. Phone charger with a long cable. Break-room outlets are never near the couch.
  10. Lip balm and hand cream. Constant hand hygiene plus dry hospital air.
  11. Sleep mask and earplugs. For a pre-drive nap in the break room or daytime sleep at home.
  12. A warm layer. ICU rooms run cold at night.
